Capacity building events 2021
The Urban Pathways Project organises , co-organises and participates in a variety of outreach and capacity building activities. By organising side-events at international conferences, Urban Pathways aims at informing a bigger audience about the mitigation potential of sustainable urban basic service measures. The project shares experiences about policies and implementation actions that contributes to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda in the context of Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Urban Pathways aims at conducting a variety of activities to increase the capacity of the different stakeholders - especially city authorities - in pilot and replication cities. Capacity building events include workshops, webinars and e-courses. Below are all relevant information about past and upcoming Urban Pathways events

Connective Cities Dialogue Event: Covid-19 and Urban Mobility, a three-day event (19, 20, and 22 July 2021), was organized by connective cities. The workshop brought civil societies from various cities to share their experience on urban mobility and emerging new mobility during the pandemic. From Urban Pathways city – Kathmandu, Nepal, Mr. Pradip Amatya of Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) and Mr. Nivesh Dugar from Cycle City Network Nepal (CCNN) actively participated in the workshop. The first day of the workshop focused on sharing what is being done in the city to promote sustainable mobility. On this note, Nivesh Dugar presented the initiative "My way, Greenway"- governed by a mobile application "Greenway". The initiative aims to promote cycling among the citizens. The data collected by the Greenway application will support developing plans, policies, and projects on sustainable mobility and enables businesses to create economic opportunities. On the second day, there was more discussion of the problems in the city related to connective cities where LMC and CCNN took insights from other cities and presented their views on it. On the third day, there was action planning related to urban mobility. To that LMC and CCNN showcased the idea of bicycle sharing and took insights into how to develop it as a sustainable model to support the initiative "MY way, Greenway". Likewise, it is currently seeking funds for piloting bicycle sharing in Lalitpur. As a follow up to the Connective Cities Dialogue Event, there are ongoing activities to develop a project proposal to support cycling infrastructure and policy planning in Kathmandu. It is also foreseen and intended to look for an opportunity for a city-to-city partnership with German cities and Kathmandu.

Roadmap invites participants to "test drive the future" and learn from leaders in industry, communities, and government agencies. Programming will be organized around these tracks:
Vehicles. The Vehicles Track will focus on the rapid electrification of cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles, as well as new forms of shared, autonomous, and micro-mobility.
Charging. Charging infrastructure is rapidly evolving to support millions of new vehicles and drivers. The Charging Track will explore how to make charging faster and more accessible while maximizing benefits for the electrical grid.
Impact. How do we ensure new mobility services reach the communities that will benefit from them the most? The Impact Track will explore the broader ecosystem needed for the market to expand with an emphasis on equitable programs, policies, and demonstration projects.
Cutting Edge. The Cutting Edge Track will feature presentations and "ignite" style talks of 5 to 7 minutes on the most important topics and emerging technologies in smart transportation.

Our past Deep Dive webinars highlighted recovery options for different types of waste – e-waste, organic waste and dry recyclables. Although cities should strive to use these technologies as much as possible, there will almost always be a “rest” (residues/rejects) which will have to be disposed off in an environmentally sound way. One possibility to construct a sanitary landfill is the so-called “Fukuoka Method”, a low-cost safe landfill management method born in Fukuoka City in Japan in the 1960s using natural ventilation mechanism to accelerate the decomposition and stabilisation of waste. The ventilation also reduces the pollution level of the leachate and reduces greenhouse gas emission compared to conventional anaerobic landfills. This webinar will take a closer look at this concept and how it is applied through a case study from Ethiopia.

February 2021
On 2nd of February 2021 we launched the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) through a virtual, global event. A panel of experts, high ranking officers and practitioners from ISWA, Global Plastic Partnership/WEF and the German and Japanese Ministry of Environment joined us in this launch. 203 participants attended the event, which was hosted by Wuppertal Institute under the Urban Pathways project.
The WaCT was created to make the process of collecting data on solid waste management easier and support city officials to improve waste management in their cities. It can also guide NGOs, educational institutions, and other stakeholders in their efforts to spread good practices on waste management. The WaCT consists of seven steps to collect all the necessary data on generation and collection of municipal solid waste as well as to estimate the quantity that is managed in controlled facilities
The recorded video of the event can be watched
You can find the introduction video as well as the WaCT manual

In our rapidly urbanizing world that features mostly unsustainable consumption and production patterns, addressing solid waste management and plastic pollution is becoming more pressing than ever before. However, reliable data and information on municipal solid waste generation and management is lacking globally, especially in cities in low- and middle-income countries. This lack of data hinders the development of sustainable solid waste management strategies and constrains investment in infrastructure and service expansion, leading in many countries to insufficient or absent municipal solid waste management services. Initiated by Urban Pathway team the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, will assist Lima, Peru, under the Waste Wise Cities Initiative (initiated by UN-Habitat) to improve the waste management system. Representatives of both cities participated in the Waste Wise Cities Tool Training on 22 October, and Lima will apply the Tool in early 2021.
Urban Pathways team has developed together with partners in Quito a pilot project on e-waste collection and introducing Extended Producer Responsibility in the country for this waste stream. The project proposal was successful and the implementation can start in early 2021 until June 2022 with funding by the GIZ PREVENT Waste Alliance.
